The Yamaha YAS480 is Yamaha’s first upgrade from their flagship 280 model. There are a few design upgrades here which, while small, really give this horn an edge.
Description
Like all Yamaha saxes the 480 is an extremely well-designed and hugely playable horn. Its medium to bright tone, together with slick key work and a very freeblowing response makes this a smooth and satisfying instrument to work with; easy enough for a raw beginner but offering enough depth and versatility for the more seasoned user.
The brass body is left unlacquered and plated with beautiful bright silver plating. The lack of lacquer does mean occasional cleaning with a silver cloth is required to maintain the finish. However, the added layer of resonant precious metal gives more projection and a wonderful extra dimension to the sound.

The gradual formation of patina on silver-plated saxophones imparts an exceptional charm and character to the instrument. It’s a captivating visual transformation that resonates with many musicians, as the saxophone evolves and matures with time.

It was great to find the latest Yamaha “intermediate” sax has received a neck upgrade to the excellent 62 models and is even compatible with the Yamaha Custom necks. Further improvements to the keywork make this a sax that you can live and grow with.
