JodyJazz Founder & President Jody Espina introduces the HR* Custom Dark, the deepest-sounding hard rubber mouthpiece in the JodyJazz lineup. Boasting rounded side walls and a large open round chamber, it maintains ample projection and surprising altissimo ease. The mouthpiece’s superior free-blowing response stems from a meticulously crafted facing curve and hand-finished tip rail, baffle, and table, hallmarks of all JodyJazz mouthpieces.

While the original HR* series is celebrated for its warm and beautiful tone, the HR* Custom Dark enhances this legacy with innovative design features. Constructed from the proprietary ‘CHR’ Chedeville hard rubber, developed for Chedeville Classical mouthpieces, the baritone version introduces more warmth and beauty. Marked with the distinctive ‘CHR,’ it signifies the mouthpiece’s construction from this special hard rubber.

Notably, the HR* Custom Dark baritone incorporates a heavy stylized ring on the shank, drawing inspiration from JodyJazz’s Power Ring® ligature. This addition amplifies the mouthpiece’s body and harmonics, further enriching its sonic character.

I have literally just finished having a jam on this mouthpiece and doing a duet with none other than Jody Espina himself (while he was here doing some filming with us).  It’s always great to catch up with Jody as he is a super genuine guy who pours his life into his business, and I’m always reminded just how much attention goes into each new design of mouthpiece.  This baritone piece is an absolute cracker – so much core and bottom to the sound, but all the while there is a crisp presence interwoven.  Even though it is his dark piece, and even here in the case of the baritone, it still has bags of projection and power.  For all you bari players out there, If you took this mouthpiece into your next Big Band rehearsal I’m certain that it will give you that perfect sectional sound, and with enough presence to handle a solo or two! – Jim Cheek
