The HR* Custom Dark by Jody Jazz offers a more traditional approach, delivering darker tones and a velvety smooth sound. Specifically designed for the alto, where tones can sometimes be overpowering and shrill, the Custom Dark excels in softening the sound, seamlessly fitting into jazz settings. While retaining the rollover baffle characteristic of the series, the large chamber complements the mouthpiece exceptionally well, making it an ideal choice for jazz enthusiasts.

Crafted with Jody’s proprietary Chedeville® Rubber, known as CHR (Chedeville Rubber), the HR* Custom Dark employs a softer and purer formula than standard hard rubber, imparting a luxurious warm sound. The mouthpiece’s design features a large round chamber, placing the timbre in a warm, dark zone, while a thick, heavy gold-plated brass band on the shank enhances the number of harmonics in the sound.

The facing curve and baffle of the HR* Custom Dark play a pivotal role in making it a joy to play. Drawing on two decades of mouthpiece craftsmanship, Jody Jazz employs a blend of science, technology, and traditional handmade techniques to perfect these essential components.
