When trying out the Profile AP3 I decided to compare it to its equivalent in the Optimum series of mouthpieces. I myself have owned an Optimum AL3 for several years, and I have been very happy with it for classical playing. I found the Profile AP3 very interesting because it was very similar to my Optimum, but also very different. I found the Profile to be slightly resistant in comparison to the free blowing response I’m used to with the Optimum (so potentially a slight reed strength adjustment needed there). The trade-off though, was that I found the scope of colours available to the Profile was a lot more extensive. I was easily able to maintain a full-bodied tone even at low volumes, and when pushed, this mouthpiece gives the upper register a beautiful shimmering quality. Another fine example from Vandoren! If you’re after a top quality classical piece then this is definitely a serious contender! – Oren Gurney
